Second graders in Sari Givner and Jessica Leeman’s class craft research projects about bodies of water all around the world.
After studying the Hudson River, students choose any body of water they want to research. Whether it’s a lake they swam in last summer or the waterfalls they saw on a recent vacation, each student has a story behind their choice.
Students carry out research in the classroom and the library, using both print and digital sources. While researching, students look for “wow” moments — interesting information about the subject that they didn’t know before.
Once their research is complete, students create and decorate bas-relief maps, craft booklets or posters, and write haikus all based on their body of water.
The lesson culminates with a presentation of the student work. First graders are invited to view the exhibit and get a preview of what they will be studying next year in school!
