At the recent New York City FIRST Tech Challenge Championships, the Fieldston Upper AIM Robotics Team earned the second place Design Award, which recognizes teams whose machines exemplify outstanding industrial design and achieve a thoughtful balance between form, function, and aesthetics. The accomplishment is especially notable given the scale of the competition; AIM was one of just 32 teams out of more than 200 across the New York City region to qualify for the championship event.

The competition also brought exciting individual recognition. Grant E. ’28 was named a FIRST Leadership Award Finalist, an honor awarded to students who demonstrate exceptional leadership within their teams while embodying and promoting FIRST Robotics’ core values in their broader communities. Grant will go on to represent the entire New York City region at the World Championships in Houston later this year.

While the team’s competitive success highlights months of technical work and strategic problem-solving, robotics at ECFS is also about community. Recently, AIM team members joined the School’s other robotics team, Launch Robotics, to host families and friends on campus for a special event to celebrate an exciting season of growth, foundation-building, and skill development.

The event offered a behind-the-scenes look at the work that goes into a growing robotics program. Students showcased their machines, walked guests through the design and testing process, reflected on the past year’s achievements, and used this opportunity to share about their future goals as the program continues to expand.
