While the pandemic altered many aspects of life for students at Fieldston Middle and Fieldston Upper, it hardly took away their desire for creative expression or their ability to make meaningful, thought-provoking, and innovative pieces of art. Here, we share thoughts from Scott Wolfson, Chair of the Visual Arts Department, along with examples of student work from this past year.
We are so excited to share this virtual exhibition of artwork by students and our recent graduates from our visual arts classes in 6th–12th Grade. While this year has posed its challenges, we’ve been so impressed and inspired by our students. Whether in the art studios on campus or at home, students got their hands dirty, experimented with materials, and discovered forms to visually express their ideas.
We sent art kits home so everyone could get off the screen and be present with their materials and their thoughts for short moments in their days. Teachers led demonstrations, shared visual inspiration, facilitated conversations, and had short critiques to encourage and challenge students to realize their ideas. From inventing new printmaking methods to learning Photoshop and drafting techniques to building models and prototypes to painting with acrylics and oils and working with charcoal to glazing ceramic tiles and building with oven bake polymer clay at home and working on the pottery wheel on campus to taking pictures and making films — it was amazing to see how resourceful everyone was. We are looking forward to everyone getting back into our art studios next fall, but for now, let’s celebrate and appreciate the work that our students made this year!
